Choosing a Film-Location Tour
The three Queenstown tours cover different scenes and different roads; Edoras is a long day from Christchurch. Here is what each one visits, from its own listing.
Queenstown is surrounded by Lord of the Rings locations, and the three tours from town go in three directions. The 4WD half day takes the Arrow River and the gold-mining country near Arrowtown. The Glenorchy tour takes the lake road north to the forest at Paradise and the Dart Valley. A third does Arrowtown and the Kawarau Gorge in a van, with replica weapons to hold. Our pick is the 4WD half day with Nomad Adventures, from US$178 and rated 4.7 from 405 reviews: four hours, 6 seats a vehicle, and the only one that drives up a river to reach its location.
By 4WD to the Ford of Bruinen. The listing names Minas Tirith, the Misty Mountains, the Pillars of the Kings, the Gladden Fields and the Ford of Bruinen. You see the Remarkables, look down on Deer Park Heights from Queenstown Hill, stop in the Kawarau Gorge, then leave the road near Arrowtown and follow a gold-mining track up the Arrow River, crossing it again and again. Gold panning and afternoon tea are included.
Up the Glenorchy road to Paradise. Pure Glenorchy’s tour heads north along Lake Wakatipu on a road its listing calls one of the top 10 drives in the world. It stops at Twelve Mile Delta for a short walk over a canyon footbridge, then Bennetts Bluff and the old wharf at Glenorchy, before going into Mount Aspiring National Park, which the listing calls the home of Lothlórien. You can dress as a character with replica swords for photos, then follow the Dart Valley through Paradise to Isengard. There is little walking, and you can stay in the vehicle at any stop. It is rated 4.9 from 514 reviews, the most reviewed of the four, from about US$119.
Arrowtown and Gibbston, with the props. Southern Trails leaves 43 Camp Street at 8:00 or 13:30 for about four hours: the top of Skippers Canyon, an hour in Arrowtown, the Ford of Bruinen and the Gladden Fields, the Kawarau River for the Argonath, and Lake Hayes. The difference is the props. You handle replica weapons, among them Gimli’s axe, Andúril and Sting, and look at original scripts and production call sheets. Also from about US$119, rated 4.9 from 227 reviews.

See datesEdoras, the capital of Rohan, was built on Mount Sunday, a hill in the Rangitata Valley in inland Canterbury. The set took the crew the best part of a year to build, with the New Zealand Army making the access road, and after about three weeks of filming it was taken down and the hill returned to its natural state. What you visit is the hill and the view, which has not changed. Christchurch’s tourism board puts Mount Sunday 160 km from the city, about 2 hours 20 minutes’ drive with the last 26 km on gravel, and the walk from the car park about 30 minutes on a Department of Conservation track that crosses two bridges, one of them a swing bridge. It is steep in places and often windy.
Hassle-Free Tours’ day leaves from outside the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch and lasts 10 hours, with a short walk to the summit, behind-the-scenes photos, replica swords and flags, and a picnic lunch. It is the only Edoras tour on this site, from about US$184 and rated 4.8 from 233 reviews. If you are in Christchurch for a day before heading south, it is the Lord of the Rings day to book; no tour on this site goes there from Queenstown. The Christchurch page sets it beside the city’s tram, punts and gondola.

See datesThe 4WD and Glenorchy tours run in any weather, and say so: dress for rain and cold. Two need a minimum number of guests. The 4WD tour needs 2 paying adults, or 4 on public holidays, and Pure Glenorchy needs 2; if a tour is cancelled for numbers, you get a full refund or an alternative. Pure Glenorchy and Southern Trails are not suitable for children under 5; Southern Trails suggests its private option for families with infants.

Guest Reviews
"Daryl was an awesome tour guide and the it was a great experience for all the amazing views."
"With limited time but wanted to see more than just the city, this tour was perfect for me. Not a Lord of the Rings fan but driving around the mountains and hearing the stories of the challenges when filming were definitely interesting. My driver/guide Nico was great! He gave a lot of information on the area, history, economy, nature and multiple movies shot in the area. I felt comfortable and save when Nico navigated mountain roads and river crossings in the 4WD. Definitely recommend this tour!"
"It was a lovely day with a lovely guide. Super cool ride and the group that were with us were very welcoming and friendly. Loved."
"Very fun and entertaining. Our guide, Jorge, was super friendly and pleasant. Although the tour is in English, it's perfectly understandable. Recommended."
"Our guide, Jorge, was super funny, friendly, and told us a lot of stories. It wasn’t as much Lord of the Rings as I would have liked, but driving the Jeep through the river, and especially Skippers Canyon, was incredible and absolutely worth it!!! We also looked for gold, but unfortunately didn't find any ;-) Overall, I can highly recommend the tour, if only for the views and the experience!!! It was a wonderful afternoon!!"
"Guide was amazing- super personable and informative guy. Cant remember is name but he was from Farnborough in the UK and had ginger hair. 4WD was really fun and the scenery was absolutely stunning!! However, don’t go into this experience thinking it’s LOTR focused, it’s more an immersive Queenstown history and scenic experience. Around 1/4 LOTR and 3/4 everything else. Would definitely recommend - just be mindful of LOTR expectations:))"
"Highly recommend, the tour was incredible and seen stunning views. Our guide Michael topped it off and was very knowledgeable, bonus with the amazing bants too"
"Our guide Tom was great. Very personable and he showed us a lot of places we would not have gone to our known about. We loved the LOTR aspect along with the other sites we saw. We stopped at the Kawarau Bridge and saw a Bungy Jumper. We also liked the offload driving and going through the river. Tom is an avid panner for gold so it was fun to try our hand at it. My son was able to find a small sliver of gold with Tom's help. We had a great time!"

The questions people ask before booking a Lord of the Rings tour on the South Island, answered in the first sentence. Locations come from each operator's listing; the history of the Edoras set from Wikipedia.
Yes: several scenes were filmed around the Wakatipu Basin and up the Arrow River near Arrowtown. The tour listings name the Remarkables, Deer Park Heights for the refugees of Rohan and the Battle of the Wargs, the Kawarau Gorge for the Pillars of the Kings, the Gladden Fields near Arrowtown and the Ford of Bruinen on the Arrow River. See the tours compared.
For off-road driving and the most named scenes, the 4WD half day; for Lothlórien and Isengard, the Glenorchy tour. The 4WD tour runs 4 hours in a 6-seat vehicle up the Arrow River to the Ford of Bruinen. The Glenorchy tour is the most reviewed, 4.9 from 514 in October 2026, with costumes and replica swords. See dates for the 4WD tour.
The Glenorchy tours place it in the beech forest at Paradise, at the edge of Mount Aspiring National Park. Pure Glenorchy's listing calls the park the home of Lothlórien, and its tour stops there for photos in costume. Sources do not all agree: one places some Lothlórien scenes near Featherston in the North Island. See the Glenorchy tour.
Up the Dart River valley beyond Glenorchy, at the head of Lake Wakatipu. Pure Glenorchy's tour drives through Paradise to the location its listing calls Isengard, in what it describes as a glacier-carved valley. The tower itself was added digitally. The tour includes National Park fees and light tea. What the tour includes.
On Mount Sunday, a hill in the Rangitata Valley in inland Canterbury. The set was built there for the films, with an access road made by the New Zealand Army, and taken down after about three weeks of filming. The only Edoras tour on this site is a 10-hour day from outside the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch. See the Edoras day.
For the landscape, yes; for a film set, no, because nothing of the set remains. After filming the hill was returned to its natural state, so you walk up Mount Sunday for the view of the valley and the mountains around it. The Hassle-Free Tours day brings replica swords and flags and behind-the-scenes photos to fill the gap, with a picnic lunch. The Edoras day.
Yes: the full-day tour to Edoras leaves from outside the Canterbury Museum and lasts 10 hours. It goes to the Mount Potts backcountry with a short walk to the summit of the hill where Edoras stood, from about US$184 in October 2026. The other three tours on this page all start in Queenstown. See the Christchurch page.
No: the Hobbiton Movie Set is near Matamata in the North Island. None of the tours on this site goes there. The South Island tours cover the Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Canterbury locations instead. lotrtournewzealand.com covers Hobbiton and the Wellington locations.
The 4WD and Glenorchy tours run in any weather, and their listings ask you to dress for it. If the 4WD tour is cancelled for weather or other conditions outside the operator's control, you are offered another date or a full refund. Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before on all four tours. Weather and minimums.
From age 5 on the Glenorchy and Arrowtown tours; check the 4WD listing, which states a passenger minimum but no age. Southern Trails suggests its private option if you are bringing infants or children under 5, and something to keep young children busy. The Glenorchy tour involves little walking. The Arrowtown tour.
About 30 minutes from the car park, on a Department of Conservation track. ChristchurchNZ describes it crossing two wooden bridges, one of them a swing bridge, and walkers describe it as steep in places and windy at the top, so bring a layer. The Edoras tour includes the walk to the summit. See the Edoras day.
Yes: the Glenorchy road is public, and Twelve Mile Delta, the first stop, is signposted. What the Pure Glenorchy tour adds is a guide who knows which shot was where, the drive up the Dart Valley through Paradise, National Park fees, costumes and replica swords for photos, and tea. You can stay in the vehicle at any stop. See the Glenorchy tour.
