"I highly recommend this cruise. The boat is amazing and the crew friendly and professional. The scenery is astounding and the marine life copious, with plentiful sightings of endangered species of birds. We saw one whale, which was cool, but they said that wasn't good enough and we had a partial refund! We will definitely do this again!"

Choosing a Kaikōura Whale Tour
Boat, Plane or Day Tour?
Why whales come this close to shore, what each listing says about sightings and refunds, and how long you spend on the water, in the air or on the road.
Kaikōura whale watching is the rare wildlife trip where the animals live close to the town, not hours offshore. Three ways to go are on sale: by catamaran with Whale Watch Kaikōura, by small plane with Air Kaikoura, or as a 10-hour day from Christchurch with the cruise included. Our pick is the cruise itself, from $99 per person and rated 4.6 from 3,823 reviews, the most-reviewed tour on this page. You spend just over 2 hours on the water and 3.5 hours in all. No listing promises a whale, and nor do we: whales are wild, and each operator words it differently, as set out below.

Why the whales are so close to Kaikōura
The reason is under the water. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation describes the Kaikōura canyon as 1000 m deep, with the undersea canyon approaching close to the land, which is why, DOC says, the sperm whale “can be regularly found so close to shore.” Whale Watch Kaikōura says Kaikōura “is one of the few places in the world where Sperm Whales can be seen year-round and close to shore.”
Other whales are seasonal. DOC says orca “are regular visitors and humpback whales pass through on their northern winter migration”, and that large pods of dusky dolphins live near the canyon. A guest on the Christchurch day tour in October saw “a humpback whale even though it’s not really the season”.
Whale Watch Kaikōura was formed in 1987 and is owned and operated by the Ngāti Kuri people of Kaikōura, a sub-tribe of Ngāi Tahu, per its own site. Kaikōura is a small base: 21 products and about 6,000 reviews in GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026.

Prices, ratings and review counts from our October 2026 data check; operators use seasonal pricing, so treat them as the shape of the market, not a quote.
All seven are priced per person and cancel free up to 24 hours before. The day tour’s van time is our reading of its itinerary: the return legs are listed at 75 minutes and 1.5 hours, and the Seal Swim listing puts Kaikōura about 2.5 hours north of Christchurch International Airport.
What each listing says about sightings and refunds
The plane is the clearest. Air Kaikoura’s listing says: “Whales are wild animals and sightings cannot be guaranteed. No refunds or rescheduling are available if whales are not sighted.” It does refund in full if the flight cannot operate because of weather, if minimum numbers are not met, or if the time moves by 30 minutes or more. It adds that flight times “may be adjusted to align with whale diving patterns”.
The cruise listing says only that the tour “is subject to favorable weather conditions”, and it sets no terms for a trip without a whale. One guest from the United Kingdom wrote in October 2026: “We saw one whale, which was cool, but they said that wasn’t good enough and we had a partial refund!” That is one guest’s experience, not a listed policy, so ask Whale Watch Kaikōura at check-in rather than count on it.
The kayak listings say “it cannot be guaranteed that you will see all animals that are listed”. Cheeky Kea’s day tour makes its Waipara wine tasting “strictly time permitting, approx. 60% of tours” and does not refund it when skipped.

The other four tours are about fur seals, which live along the peninsula. Kaikōura Kayaks says it holds “New Zealand’s only permit allowing guided kayak tours to view whales, dolphins, and seals”, and runs a 3-hour half-day trip and a sunset paddle, both in stable double sea kayaks and both for ages 13 and up. SealKayakKaikoura’s pedal kayaks leave your hands free; the operator calls it the first and only pedal kayak tour in New Zealand. Seal Swim Kaikoura, a small family business since 1987, puts you in the water with the seals in a wetsuit; it is not suitable for non-swimmers or children under 12.
Season and what to expect
Sperm whales are the year-round residents; humpbacks and orca are the seasonal and occasional extras, per DOC. Weather decides more than season: the cruise is subject to favorable conditions and the flight is weather dependent. A guest from Austria on the half-day kayak saw plenty of seals, but “the dolphins and whales didn’t seem to want to appear at the exact time of our kayaking trip”. Bring warm layers, and take something for motion sickness before the boat if you need it. The July 2026 floods closed State Highway 1 south of the town until 15 July, and NZTA still had a single-lane stop/go section near Hawkswood in August; check journeys.nzta.govt.nz before driving up from Christchurch.
Who each suits
Most first-time visitors should take the cruise: the most reviews, two hours at sea and bus transfers from the office. Anyone short of time, or who wants the view from above, suits the 30-minute flight, though it has a 120 kg passenger limit and a guest from Italy found it “challenging for those who have never done it before”. Travellers without a car, based in Christchurch, should take Cheeky Kea’s day tour. Families with children under 13 suit the pedal kayaks, which accept ages 3 and up. For how Kaikōura fits a longer trip, see the itinerary by base town, or compare guided tours and self-drive.

Kaikōura Whale Watching FAQ
The questions people ask before booking whale watching at Kaikōura, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing; whale facts from the Department of Conservation and Whale Watch Kaikōura.
No one can promise it: whales are wild animals. Air Kaikoura's listing says sightings cannot be guaranteed and that no refunds or rescheduling are available if whales are not sighted. The Whale Watch Kaikōura cruise listing sets no sighting terms and says the tour is subject to favorable weather conditions. The tour comparison sets out each listing's wording.
A deep undersea canyon runs close to the land. The Department of Conservation describes the Kaikōura canyon as 1000 m deep and says the sperm whale can be regularly found close to shore. Whale Watch Kaikōura calls Kaikōura one of the few places in the world where sperm whales can be seen year-round and close to shore. See the whale cruise.
Sperm whales are there year-round; humpbacks and orca are seasonal or occasional. DOC says orca are regular visitors and humpback whales pass through on their northern winter migration. Weather matters more day to day: the cruise is subject to favorable weather and the flight is weather dependent. Read the itinerary by base town to fit Kaikōura in.
The boat gives you longer out; the plane is shorter and, in the operator's words, covers large ocean distances. The cruise spends just over 2 hours on the water, with 3.5 hours in all. Air Kaikoura's flight is 30 minutes from Kaikoura Airport, limited to 7 participants, with a window seat for everyone and a 120 kg passenger limit. See the whale flight.
Yes: Cheeky Kea Tours runs a 10-hour day with the Whale Watch Kaikoura cruise included. It picks up from 15 central Christchurch locations, includes lunch and snacks, and takes up to 16 guests. Its Waipara wine tasting is time permitting, on about 60% of tours, and is not refunded if skipped. See the day tour or the Christchurch tours.
Take precautions before you arrive. Whale Watch Kaikōura recommends this to anyone who suffers from motion sickness and sells tablets at its office. Cheeky Kea suggests bringing anti-nausea pills, and a guest on the sunset kayak from Germany advised taking something beforehand. The cruise page lists the operator's notes.
Yes, from age three on the cruise, subject to sea and weather conditions at check-in. The day tour from Christchurch is not suitable for children under 4. On the water, Kaikōura Kayaks' trips are for ages 13 and up, while SealKayakKaikoura's pedal kayaks are not suitable for children under 3. See the pedal kayak tour.
Yes: Seal Swim Kaikoura runs a 2.5-hour snorkel with New Zealand fur seals. Wetsuits and equipment are included, and the group is limited to 10. It is not suitable for non-swimmers, children under 12 or people with heart problems, and swimmers must be water confident. See the seal snorkel.
