South Island Tours From Dunedin and Oamaru

Guided tours from Dunedin and Oamaru: the Taieri Gorge train, Otago Peninsula wildlife tours, city and Larnach Castle days, and the Oamaru penguin evening.

Updated October 2026

Base yourself in Dunedin for the Taieri Gorge train and the Otago Peninsula wildlife tours, and treat Oamaru as an evening stop for the blue penguins, an hour and a half up the coast.

Dunedin is a smaller tour base than Queenstown or Christchurch. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026 it had 42 South Island products and about 1,400 reviews. What it has is specific: a railway into a gorge, and a peninsula of wildlife on the edge of the city. Oamaru has one guided product we track, and it is an evening, not a day.

The Taieri Gorge train

This is the one Dunedin day out that only works as a guided trip. The operator describes the gorge as “accessible only by rail”. The return journey takes five hours from Dunedin Railway Station, crosses more than 12 bridges and viaducts, including the Wingatui Viaduct, and goes through 10 hand-carved tunnels. You get off at Deep Stream to walk across the viaduct and watch the train cross the gorge, and there is a photo stop at Pukerangi.

Practical points from the listing: check-in opens an hour before departure and closes 15 minutes before. Mobile coverage is limited, so cards do not always work in the cafe; bring cash. A wheelchair-accessible carriage and lift are available on request, with limited space.

A reviewer from Germany, October 2026: “We were in the carriage with the coal-fired heater and had the seat where the window was open a crack. The scenery was wonderful.”

Otago Peninsula wildlife

Two tours, two different days.

Clearwater Wildlife Tours is the longer one: 4 hours from outside the i-SITE at 50 The Octagon, a maximum of 10 guests, and 4WD vehicles to the family farm at Cape Saunders. The operator lists yellow-eyed penguins, New Zealand sea lions and fur seals among the wildlife on its private land. It is not an easy outing: about 1.5 km of walking over steep hills, steps and a beach, and no stops for refreshments, so bring food. Binoculars and waterproof jackets are supplied. The operator says the wildlife is unpredictable and every species cannot be guaranteed.

The OPERA is the short one: 90 minutes from 45 Pakihau Road in Portobello, with access to its rehabilitation centre and a guided nature walk in the reserve, and rain jackets provided. Sightings vary. A reviewer from Germany, October 2026, recommended it “even though we didn’t see any penguins in the wild”; a reviewer from the United States, September 2026, “got to see a juvenile yellow-eyed penguin, a blue fairy penguin and some seals.”

City days and Larnach Castle

Both city tours combine Baldwin Street, Signal Hill and the railway station with a drive onto the peninsula and Larnach Castle’s gardens. Read the exclusions: Skyline Tourism’s 6-hour tour includes Larnach Gardens entry but not the castle interior or the Royal Albatross Centre colony tour. Tourworks NZ’s 5.5-hour tour gives 1.5 hours at Larnach Castle with the grounds included and the castle interior optional. Both collect from Port Chalmers, so they suit a cruise stop. See Dunedin tours.

Oamaru: the evening penguins

Oamaru is 113 km north of Dunedin, about 1 hour 30 minutes by newzealand.com’s figures, and about 3 hours south of Christchurch. None of the tours we track runs there from either city, so you drive and either stay the night or drive back after dark.

The evening viewing ticket seats you about 10 to 15 metres from where the little blue penguins come up the beach to their nests, with commentary from a local guide. The timing moves with the season: the listing says viewing can be as late as 9 pm in summer, while in winter the penguins arrive as early as 5:30 pm, and numbers vary from over 200 in summer to under 30 in winter. newzealand.com puts the November to December breeding season at around 250 birds an evening. Photography and video are not allowed, and it gets cold, so bring a warm jacket and long trousers.

A reviewer from the United Kingdom, October 2026: “We got to see over 300 of these amazing tiny penguins come in from the ocean”.

Powerd by GetYourGuide

Two days in Dunedin, one evening in Oamaru

  • Day 1: the Taieri Gorge train in the morning, Speight’s Brewery or the city in the afternoon.
  • Day 2: an Otago Peninsula wildlife tour.
  • On the way north: Oamaru for the evening penguins, and a night there before the 3-hour drive to Christchurch.

Queenstown to Dunedin is 3 hours 30 minutes, so Dunedin fits as the southern turn of a loop. See the itinerary by base town, and check penguin and daylight times in the best time for South Island tours.
