Queenstown or Christchurch as a Base?

Stay in Queenstown or Christchurch? Which guided day tours start from each city, how long the Mount Cook days take from both, and what neither reaches.

Updated October 2026

Stay in Queenstown for the lake, the Mount Cook day and the most choice; stay in Christchurch for Kaikōura’s whales and the Tekapo-and-Mount-Cook day on the east side of the Alps.

The two cities are 484 km and 6 hours 10 minutes apart by the direct road, so they are not alternatives for the same day trips. Each reaches a different set of guided days. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, Queenstown had 306 South Island products and about 39,900 reviews; Christchurch had 136 products and about 7,700 reviews. Queenstown has more to choose from. Christchurch has two day trips Queenstown cannot match.

The Mount Cook day from each city

Both cities sell a long day to Aoraki/Mount Cook, and the listings say how much of it you spend on the road.

From Queenstown, the road goes through the Kawarau Gorge, Cromwell, Lindis Pass, Omarama and past Lake Pukaki. The Cheeky Kiwi day is 12 hours with pickup from 28 locations; you walk the Hooker Valley Track on your own, and the listing says most people finish it in 2 to 3 hours. Omarama is the only place to buy food, so bring lunch. Altitude Tours’ day ($163, 12 hours) gives 3.5 hours of free time in Mount Cook Village and includes the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre.

From Christchurch, the road crosses the Canterbury Plains and stops at Lake Tekapo on the way. Cheeky Kea’s listing is direct about it: a 13-hour tour with 8 hours of driving and 2.5 to 3 hours at Mount Cook, weather permitting, with pickup from 6:15 to 6:40 AM and a return around 6:30 to 7:00 PM. NZ South Island Tours & Travel gives about 2.5 hours of free time and includes lunch.

A reviewer from Australia on the Cheeky Kea tour: “It is a huge day but worth it.”

If you have the time, you do not need either: sleep at Tekapo or in the village and the Hooker Valley is a short drive. See Mount Cook tours.

Choose Queenstown if

  • You want guided days on the water and in the hills close to town: the TSS Earnslaw (1.5 hours), the Walter Peak farm, a horse trek at Walter Peak, or the Gibbston wineries.
  • You want the most choice on any given date. Queenstown has more than twice Christchurch’s product count.
  • You plan to add Wānaka, which newzealand.com puts 1 hour 10 minutes away. See Wānaka tours.

Milford Sound tours also leave from Queenstown; this site does not cover them. See Queenstown tours.

Choose Christchurch if

  • Whale watching is the point. Kaikōura is about 2 hours 20 minutes north, and in our listings only Christchurch has a guided day there. See Kaikōura whale watching.
  • You want Lake Tekapo’s church and lake in daylight and Mount Cook in the same day.
  • You are flying in and out of Christchurch and want guided days without a hire car. The city sights are on a tram loop; the heritage and earthquake walking tour is 2 hours from the Bridge of Remembrance for $16. See Christchurch tours.

Without a car

Both cities work without a hire car, in different ways.

In Queenstown the lake trips leave from the town centre. The Walter Peak cruises start at the RealNZ Queenstown Visitor Centre, and RealNZ’s listings say there is no parking, so leave the car at your accommodation anyway. Queenstown Wine Trail can arrange pickup from selected accommodation, and the Mount Cook days collect from 28 pickup points (Cheeky Kiwi) or 15 (Altitude Tours).

In Christchurch the tram is the transport: you can board at any of its 18 stops. The gondola is not on the tram route. The combo listing puts it 15 minutes from the city centre and names public bus #8 as the way there. The Kaikōura and Mount Cook day tours pick up from central hotels, between 10 and 15 locations depending on the operator.

What neither city does well

  • Stargazing at Tekapo. The night tours start at Tekapo and Twizel, and newzealand.com puts Tekapo about three hours’ drive from Christchurch and from Queenstown Airport. The day tours from Christchurch come home in the evening. Stay a night at Tekapo for Lake Tekapo stargazing.
  • Dunedin and Oamaru. Queenstown to Dunedin is 3 hours 30 minutes; Christchurch to Oamaru is about 3 hours. Neither city has a guided day trip there in our listings. See tours from Dunedin and Oamaru.

Or use both

Many trips fly into one city and out of the other. Spend two or three nights in each, and connect them with a one-way guided day via Tekapo and Mount Cook: see Christchurch to Queenstown tours. For the full plan with the towns in between, see the itinerary by base town.
