Christchurch to Queenstown Tours via Mount Cook
The one-way guided day between Christchurch and Queenstown via Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook: 13 hours, the stops, time at Mount Cook, luggage and lunch.
If you are moving between the two cities anyway, a one-way guided day turns the transfer into a Tekapo and Mount Cook day: about 13 hours door to door, with 2.5 to 3 hours at Aoraki/Mount Cook.
Two operators run it in GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, one in each direction. Cheeky Kea Tours goes from Christchurch to Queenstown; Cheeky Kiwi Travel goes from Queenstown to Christchurch. Neither returns you to where you started. If you are staying put in one city, book a return Mount Cook day instead.

Both have their own pages: Christchurch to Queenstown via Tekapo and Mount Cook and Queenstown to Christchurch via Mount Cook. The return Mount Cook days are on Mount Cook tours.
What the day involves, Christchurch to Queenstown
Cheeky Kea’s itinerary lists every leg. In order:
- Pickup in central Christchurch, then 100 minutes to Geraldine (10-minute break).
- 35 minutes to Fairlie Bakehouse (10 minutes).
- 35 minutes to Lake Tekapo and the Church of the Good Shepherd (15 minutes).
- 35 minutes to Lake Pukaki (10 minutes).
- 30 minutes to Aoraki/Mount Cook (2.5 hours). You choose the Hooker Valley Track, the Tasman Glacier viewpoint, or the village and the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre. Scenic flights are sold separately.
- 45 minutes to High Country Salmon (10 minutes), 40 minutes to Lindis Pass (10 minutes), 85 minutes to the Kawarau Gorge Suspension Bridge (10 minutes), then 25 minutes into Queenstown.
Add up the van legs and you get a little over 7 hours on the road and close to 4 hours stopped, 2.5 of them at Mount Cook. Two cautions from the listing itself. The time at Mount Cook “may be less than advertised” because of delays from other customers or road conditions, so the full Hooker Valley Track, which Cheeky Kiwi’s Hooker Valley listing puts at 2 to 3 hours, may not fit. And bookings from 1 November no longer guarantee the High Country Salmon stop; a Jacksons Orchard stop is dropped, replaced by brief stops at Wānaka and Cardrona.
A reviewer from Australia, October 2026: “It transformed a simple transfer into an incredible road trip through some of the most stunning scenery in New Zealand.”
The other direction, Queenstown to Christchurch
Cheeky Kiwi Travel runs the route the other way round. From Queenstown it passes through the Kawarau Gorge, Cromwell and Lake Dunstan to a 10-minute photo stop at Lindis Pass, then a 30-minute stop in Omarama to eat. After a 10-minute stop at Lake Pukaki you get about 3 hours in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, then 10 minutes at Lake Tekapo and the drive across the Canterbury Plains to drop-off at central Christchurch accommodation.
The listing excludes lunch, tea and coffee, scenic flights and guided hikes, so bring food or buy it in Omarama. It is not suitable for people with back problems or wheelchair users, and oversize luggage, bikes and pets are not allowed.
A reviewer from the United Kingdom, October 2026: “Mount Cook trip was a fantastic experience, made more memorable due to great weather.”
One-way tour, return day tour, or drive?
| Option | Hours | What you see | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-way guided day | 13 | Tekapo, Pukaki, Mount Cook, Lindis Pass | Moving cities without a car |
| Return day from Queenstown | 12 | Pukaki, Mount Cook, Hooker Valley | Staying in Queenstown |
| Return day from Christchurch | 13 | Tekapo, Pukaki, Mount Cook | Staying in Christchurch |
| Drive direct | 6 h 10 min (484 km) | Tekapo and Pukaki from the road; Mount Cook is a detour | A hire car and no Mount Cook walk |
newzealand.com puts the direct drive at 6 hours 10 minutes and the scheduled InterCity coach at about 8 hours 10 minutes. The guided day is longer than both because it spends half a day stopped.
If you have a car and two or three days, the slower version is better: a night at Lake Tekapo for stargazing, a night near Mount Cook, then Wānaka and Queenstown. The itinerary by base town sets this out.
Practical notes
- Plan the evening light. Cheeky Kea’s listing says the guide gives the collection time at Mount Cook at 2:15pm, and the van legs after that add up to more than three hours, so expect to reach Queenstown in the early evening. Book the hotel at the far end and keep that night free.
- Winter. Lindis Pass and the road between Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook have closed overnight for snow in past winters. Check the operator’s policy for road closures.
- The Hooker Valley. A new 189-metre swing bridge, which DOC calls the longest in New Zealand, opened in July 2026 and the full track is open. DOC now enforces a 20-person limit on the first bridge, so allow for a short wait at busy times.
