South Island Guided Tours, Town by Town
Most guided tours you can book on the South Island are day tours from a base town, not week-long coach trips. Pick where you stay, then the days out: lake cruises from Queenstown, whales at Kaikoura, Mount Cook, dark skies at Tekapo, Wanaka's islands and Dunedin's railway.

How This Site Works
Guided Days From a Base Town
What 'guided tour' means on the South Island, the seven towns most tours start from, and which suits your trip.
Most guided tours you can book on New Zealand’s South Island are day tours from a base town, so the first choice is where you stay, not which week-long coach trip to join. Search for South Island guided tours and the first results are multi-day coach companies. Those exist, and they suit people who want every night arranged. But on GetYourGuide’s South Island shelf in October 2026, about 25 of some 1,100 products ran over several days, with 132 reviews between them. Everything else was a day out from a town.
So this site is built the other way round. Choose a base, then the guided days from it. Each town below has its own page with its tours side by side: where each one starts, how long it runs, how much of that is on the road, and what the listing includes.
| Base town | The guided days | Featured tour | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Queenstown | Lake cruises, Walter Peak farm, wine tours, a 4WD film tour | Walter Peak BBQ and lake cruise | $99 | 4.8 (3,194) |
| Christchurch | Tram, punts, gondola, a city walk, the Edoras film day | Tram, punt and gondola combo | $69 | 4.7 (696) |
| Kaikoura | Whale-watching boats and flights, kayaking with seals | Whale watching cruise | $99 | 4.6 (3,823) |
| Mount Cook | Small-group days from Queenstown or Christchurch | Mt Cook and Hooker Valley from Queenstown | $156 | 4.8 (597) |
| Lake Tekapo | Guided stargazing, outdoors and indoors | Mount John summit stargazing | $135 | 4.6 (333) |
| Wanaka | Island trips, waterfall climbs, lakeside trails | Water taxi and Mou Waho island | $79 | 4.9 (384) |
| Dunedin | The Taieri Gorge railway, peninsula wildlife, Oamaru’s penguins | Taieri Gorge scenic railway | $96 | 4.6 (236) |

Why base towns, not one long tour
The South Island’s guided tours cluster where visitors sleep. In GetYourGuide’s catalogue in October 2026, Queenstown alone carried 306 South Island products and about 39,900 reviews; Christchurch 136 products, Wanaka 69, Dunedin 42, Lake Tekapo 28, Kaikoura 21 and Aoraki/Mount Cook 18. A town with a few dozen tours still has more guided days than most visitors have time for.
Basing yourself also changes what a day costs you. A lake cruise from Queenstown is two or three hours with little time on the road. A day to Mount Cook from Queenstown is a long coach day, most of it driving. Neither is wrong, but you should know which you are booking, and each town’s page says.
Which base suits what
You want the most choice. Queenstown has the deepest shelf: cruises on Lake Wakatipu, the Walter Peak high-country farm, wine and food in the gorge, and a 4WD trip to film locations.
You are flying in or out of Christchurch. Christchurch has easy city days, and it is the start of the whale-watching day tour to Kaikoura and of several Mount Cook days.
Whales are the point of the trip. Stay in Kaikoura itself if you can, so a cancelled boat can be rebooked the next day.
You want the high mountains. Mount Cook works as a day tour from Queenstown or Christchurch, or you can stay nearby and walk the Hooker Valley on your own. Lake Tekapo is the place for the night sky.
You want somewhere smaller than Queenstown. Wanaka has the lake islands and the waterfall climbs; Dunedin has the railway, the peninsula wildlife and Oamaru’s penguins.
Where to go next
If you are still deciding between a guided trip and driving yourself, guided tours or a self-drive weighs the two. An itinerary by base town strings the seven together, Queenstown or Christchurch helps with the first choice, and the best time for South Island tours sets out what changes by season.
South Island Guided Tours FAQ
What people ask before booking a guided day on the South Island, answered in the first sentence. Tour details come from each operator's listing, checked in October 2026.
It depends on your base: a lake cruise or wine tour from Queenstown, whale watching at Kaikoura, a Mount Cook day, or stargazing at Lake Tekapo. Each town page compares its tours by start point, length and what is included. Choose a base town
Both exist, but almost everything you can book on GetYourGuide is a day tour. In its October 2026 catalogue about 25 of some 1,100 South Island products ran over several days. Multi-day coach tours are sold mainly by coach companies directly. Guided tours or a self-drive
Queenstown for the most guided days, Christchurch if you fly in there or want Kaikoura and the city. Queenstown carried 306 South Island products in GetYourGuide's catalogue in October 2026, Christchurch 136. Queenstown or Christchurch
Yes, from Queenstown or Christchurch, but it is a long day and most of it is on the road. The Mount Cook page sets out each tour's hours of driving and time at the mountain, from the listings. Mount Cook day tours
No tour can promise a whale, and the listings differ on what happens if you miss them. Weather can also cancel boats and flights, which is why a night in Kaikoura gives you a second chance. Whale watching compared
Each operator has its own rule for cloud, and two of the listings state none, so ask before you book. The stargazing page sets out what each listing says. Stargazing tours
Some guided tours run one way between towns, such as Queenstown to Christchurch via Mount Cook. Others return to where they started, so check each listing's end point. The Christchurch to Queenstown day
